Video Encoding Recommendations

Last Updated: Dec 10, 2015 11:33AM MST
For best results, Simian recommends the following settings for encoding videos for the web.

To ensure the best possible quality of compression start with the highest resolution source files available.

Video Format:
For optimal playback, browser and platform compatibility Simian recommends H.264 video codec, with a AAC audio codec in MP4 format.

Fast Start: Enabled

NOTE: If encoding to MP4, most encoders automatically enable fast start on MP4 files so the option might appear as greyed out or un-selectable.

Recommended Settings:

Bit Rate: The higher the resolution, the higher the bit rate required in order to maintain quality. Below is a handy table of Simian recommendations by resolution.
Note: Higher bit rates may not stream well on weaker internet connections.

Simian Tools:

Bit Rate Threshold Warnings: Simian will scan each video you upload to the system and let you know if it exceeds the selected bit rate threshold (the default setting is 1500 KB). It will also inform you if the video does not have the fast start setting enabled, which allows the video to play right away vs downloading the entire video before playing.

Real Time Video Encoder: If you are unfamiliar with encoding process or don’t have an encoding application, Simian provides it's clients with our RTVE Application.
